This Sinking Ship October 31st, 2014

A balance sheet showing the national debt, Social Security and Medicare would put the government's liabilities at around 120 trillion dollars. This year they will have revenues of about 3 trillion dollars. The government is obviously and unavoidably bankrupt.

If this were any other entity the next trip to the bank would cause a drastic change in spending habits. But this particular entity has a hole in the back of the bank's vault through which it accesses money without the banks knowledge. The bank knows it has less money each year, but is evidently too stupid to connect that fact to the entity that is still making its payments in spite of a four thousand to one debt to income ratio.

The 110 million Americans who still have a job earn an average of $48,000. The government's 3 trillion in revenues work out to 27,000 per worker or 56 percent. The rich don't pay it, they have tax attorneys, accountants and 80,000 pages of loopholes. Corporations don't pay it, they take their share out of your wages or they collect it when you pay for their product.

Our tax system is deliberately indecipherable because it is hiding something, the fact that the government's only source of revenue is Americans who go to work and earn it. Each year we get to keep less of what we earn and so each year there are fewer people working because it's just not worth it.

I have long believed that some catastrophic event would trigger an economic collapse, but it is also possible that they will keep things going as they are. The top 4 or 5 percent can keep getting wealthier whether there is a middle class or not, and the stock market can keep going up even though small business cannot survive.

Taxes will go up. Incomes will go down. If you have any savings they will be eroded away by inflation. If you collect a check from the government, it will be dramatically reduced in value or stop altogether and for the majority of Americans our standard of living will continue to decrease until we are on a par with the rest of the world.

My work puts into contact with thousands of people every month. Granted all of them have jobs, but as near as I can tell the support for a fiscally sound government is unanimous. And yet over the last couple of weeks we have listened to thousands of political ads, not one of them offering to make the federal government solvent.

Romney was right in that 45 percent of the people would rather see the country crash and burn than give up their particular government benefit. 45 percent shouldn't win elections and it wouldn't if our side was willing to throw all of the special interests overboard to save this sinking ship.

Join Dale for a daily prayer

pray4america.png

Join Dale for a daily prayer at the beginning of Down on the Corner each weekday morning at 7:06.  We are proud to open our local programming with a prayer, as we recall 2 Chronicles 7:14, "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

Special thanks to Gilbert Realty for providing the airtime each day for the morning prayer.
